Description: Dated ca. 1861-1865, this is a photograph of American Civil War Brigadier General John Sanford Mason. Mason was born in Steubenville, Ohio, in 1824 and attended Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, and Washington College in Pennsylvania before being appointed to the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York, in 1843. After battling illness while serving in the Mexican War, Mason served in the American Civil War and eventually became the colonel of the 4th Ohio Infantry. View on Ohio Memory.

In 1829, he passed the bar exam and moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, to establish his own law practice. An ardent abolitionist, Chase represented many fugitive slaves trying to win their freedom. He held many political offices, including United States Senator, Governor of Ohio, Secretary of the Treasury, and Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court. Description: Reverse reads: "file 10-29-39. Ironton, O. Semet Solvay, which manufactures coke and iron by-products of coal." The photograph shows a manufacturing plant with three large smoke stacks, the closest of which reads "Ironton Solvay" The Solvay Process Company was a pioneer chemical industry of the United States, a major employer in central New York, and origin of the Village of Solvay, New York. The Solvay Process Company was a joint venture between the inventing chemists, Belgians Ernest and Alfred Solvay, who owned the patent rights to the Solvay process, and Americans William B. Cogswell (1834–1921) and Rowland Hazard II (1829–1898). The Hazard family invested in an affiliated business, the Semet-Solvay Company, formed in 1895. Louis Semet, a relative of Ernest and Alfred Solvay, had developed with the brothers a coke oven designed to recover valuable materials formerly wasted in the coking process. In 1892 the Solvay Process Company built the first of the ovens in America, forming the Semet-Solvay Company three years later to build and operate them. Coke plants were located in Ashland, Kentucky; Buffalo, New York; Detroit, Michigan; and Ironton, Ohio. Semet-Solvay operated its own mines in West Virginia, providing much of its coal supply. Description: Colored lithographic print titled “American Winter Scenes--Evening,” by Currier & Ives, showing couples in sleighs arriving to a party at a large home by a lake. During the mid to late nineteenth century, the Currier & Ives printing firm was a well-known producer of lithographic prints. Common subjects matter included historical events such as the Civil and Revolutionary Wars, the North American landscape, rural life in the United States and wildlife. Nathaniel Currier began his career in the printing business as an apprentice at a Boston printing firm in 1828, and opened his own printing firm in New York in 1835. James Ives joined the firm in 1852 as a bookkeeper, and was soon made a partner in 1857. They sold prints from their own New York shop and also distributed them through peddlers and country stores across the United States. Currier and Ives were both succeeded in the printing business by their sons, Edward West Currier and Chauncey Ives. Both sons eventually sold their interest in the firm, and in 1907 the last owner, Daniel W. Logan, closed the business and sold the printing equipment. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: A painting of the Woolworth Building as viewed during the day. Located at 233 Broadway, Manhattan, New York City, the Woolworth Building is an early US skyscraper. It was designed by architect Cass Gilbert and completed in 1913. At 241.4 meters (792 ft), it is one of the fifty tallest buildings in the United States and one of the twenty tallest buildings in New York City. Between 1913 and 1930 it was the tallest building in the world. It has been a National Historic Landmark since 1966 and a New York City landmark since 1983. Initially the building was owned by the F. W. Woolworth Company. Due to its resemblance to European Gothic cathedrals, it was nicknamed "The Cathedral of Commerce." View on Ohio Memory.
